Carbs in the Kitchen

It may be 2012 and my 2011 resolution may be completed but I'm still cooking. As long as Pinterest exists the desire—scratch that—the need to cook and try new recipes will exist.

This past month, in a biscuit vs. roll bake-off I tried these three recipes:

1. Sweet Potato Biscuits

2. KFC's Kentucky Biscuits

3. Sweet Potato and Honey Dinner Rolls

There's no clear winner here, and in actuality I'm not sure if I'd tackle any of these again however— #2 wins in the ease category (And the taste isn't identical but is quite close to the KFC taste). BUT #3 definitely wins the tastiness battle - even if I'm not a fan of dealing with yeast. This was my first yeast challenge and I obviously need more practice!

Anyhow, this is what has been going on on in my kitchen. Next up—scones!

Outlook Bright

In case you haven't been to the mall lately, the Spring fashion color report is in... and it's bright. It's bright and it's striped and I'm in love with it!

Yes sir, the Color of the Year is Tangerine, (See Pantone's full Fashion Color Trend Report for Spring 2012) and according to today's DSW mailer, "This season, we're inspired by bright colors and playful prints."

Don't believe me, simply surf on over to your favorite clothing sites. Here we have Gap, Banana Republic, Forever 21, NY&Co, J Crew and Kate Spade.

Of course, Anthropologie isn't about to be shown up by no-one. Check out their incredible Spring Windows.

And, for the cherry on top—while I was typing this Target commercial came on. "Color Changes Everything." Nuff said.

Anyhow, I'm excited for the season, and not just because I despise snowy weather, but because I know it's going to be a great one for color, clothes and shoes. Brighten up— it's going to be great!

Craft Hour at the Library

I love books, especially old ones. I also love crafting (really??). Which pretty much makes The Repurposed Library by Lisa Occhipinti the Bible as far as I'm concerned. It's full of great ideas.

In fact when we were at the Recycled Arts Market in November there was a woman selling birdhouses made out of old books. They were beautiful and drawing people in like the latest beloved endangered species. You can find instructions for book birdhouses in Occhipinti's book!

Among other wonderful ideas... like a Kindle Keeper!

I highly recommend checking it out.

Getting Cozy with my Tea Cozy

Nothing beats a sock monkey surprise. This was waiting for me when I got home from work last night. What a great hat right? WRONG! It's a tea cozy! The most fantastic tea cozy I've ever seen.

My mom made it—using our stash of old sweaters of course. It's lined with fleece and fits right over my little tea pot.

Sock monkeys are pretty much always a home run with me, but I have to say, this one is pretty extra fab.

My response to the cozy was so strong that I wouldn't be surprise if they show up on the ScrappyLynn Etsy page soon!

I haven't yet embraced the new Facebook Timeline. (Resistance is futile, rumor is the new layout will be mandatory before the month is over). But what I dislike about the new Facebook profile design*, I love about these Timeline cards from Moo.com.

At Home with Martha (Stewart that is)

It was a long, hard week, so by Friday evening I was more than ready for a little TGIF. So I stayed in with the March Martha Stewart and some Boy Meets World dvds (see heeelarious outtakes here).

Now despite the issue's lackluster cover (seriously, must Martha be on every other cover?) the inside content did not disappoint.

This image, which really didn't seem to correlate with the rest of the issue's design at all (I think it's awesome despite it's seemingly randomness), has me geeked about Spring gardening plans.

It's February and 50 degrees out—in Michigan. Bulbs are already making appearances; my mother has Snowbells blooming in her backyard. And with Martha's March garden preparation tips, I'm more than ready for Spring.

I'm just crossing my fingers we're not being teased....

A Feast of Sides

Being a vegetarian hasn't really changed my life, but not eating chicken means it's probably been over 6 years since I'd been to a KFC. Last night, we went and bought all the KFC sides and biscuits and had a winter picnic on the living room floor.

It seems that in the last decade, the colonel has changed his menu, dropping several sides, including potato salad and corn (unless this varies daily or by branch). So our picnic consisted of mashed potatoes/gravy, cole slaw, mac and cheese, baked beans and biscuits.

Our conclusion was, that this was a genius idea and we'd totally do it again. Next time we'd skip the mac and cheese, as the cheese was obviously mixed from some sort of powder, and we'd get twice as many biscuits. The biscuits were exactly as tasty as we remembered them... but smaller.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the biscuits** that keep KFC in business.

**Gonna have to try this recipe while the taste is still fresh in my memory. See if this recipe comes close. Have a hard time believing the colonel would share all his secrets!

Forwardable Art

I've never been much of a forwarder. But I do appreciate a good forward, and one series I've always enjoyed is the amazing 3D Chalk Guy. If you don't know what I mean, you can check it out here. Basically, the art is drawn in such a altered perspective that from a certain vantage point, reality is distorted. I'm impressed by both the vision it takes to create one of these and the imagination behind each scenario.

I assume the 3D chalk work of Julian Beever would never be considered graffiti. Which leads me to wonder about the line between graffiti and street art— Is it simply a matter of washability?

I bring this up, because this week I was forwarded a collection of street art images. I thought they were incredible — in skill and in creativity. I hate to imagine there's people out there who don't see this as art. Imagine how art like this on abandoned buildings or in dull parking lots could change a city's landscape.

Ok, so the card I designed for my parents made it's way to Minnesota—to a friend of their's that my dad met in New Orleans while doing work with Habitat. Said friend sent the card to the Detroit Lakes Tribune, and the paper wrote this article about it.

I can picture them walking now and I see them as “The Spirit of 2012.” "

I'm so glad the card made it out of Grand Rapids, and that someone understood and appreciated the sentiment and message! You know, I seriously may be more excited about this than I was about winning an Addy last year.

French Fry Taste Test Round 2

There was recently big buzz in the fast food world when Burger King updated their french fry recipe—I presume in response to Wendy's successful introduction of natural cut fries earlier in the year. It was the first time the chain reformulated their fries since 1998, when they transitioned to "extra crispy" fries. The new fries are thicker, and supposedly retain heat longer.

So, in light of this new introduction, it was time to redo our face-off. Same judges, three contestants: McDs, Wendy's and Burger King. And the consensus was mutual.

Right off the bat, Burger King loses the right to call themselves fast food. Their drive-thru took about 5 times longer than the other too. But this is about taste, so I will digress....

When dealing with a fresh french fry, Wendy's wins on taste. They're still serving their natural cut fries, and while not technically healthier for you, they taste more like an actual potato. Mmmmm. Burger King tastes distinctly coated, and even a little chemically (perhaps like a heat retention coating should taste?)

However, over the course of the meal, as the french fries cool, Wendy's quickly loses it's appeal—their fries get mushy as they cool. Burger King's fries definitely retain their heat, they stay crispy and over time, lose the chemical taste. So the rankings actually flip. McDonalds just sort of hangs out in the middle of all this. They taste like a salty McDonalds fry—exactly what you expect from the fast food mogul.

So fast food now has a strategy. If you're eating on-site, go with Wendy's (or McDs if you're all about the Big Mac). But if you intend to go through the drive thru and have a 15 minute drive before you actually eat, Burger King's heat retaining chemicals would actually be a benefit here.

Yes, boys and girls, fast food really is that complicated.

⌘C and ⌘P All Over the Place

Three days back at the office and I'm eager to get to my weekend so I can reconnect with my gluesticks and mod podge. I had a fantastic time doing a little old school ⌘C and ⌘P over the holiday and I'm ready to get back to it!

My mom had found these issues of McCall's needlecraft magazine from the '50s and '60s while doing cleaning house. One girl's garbage is another girl's jackpot— the photos, fonts, ads, and images in these magazines are quite fantastic. Combined with my vintage fabric pattern collection and some actual fabric, they were excellent fodder for a little mixed media collaging. Here's one I finished, and I have two more in progress I hope to finish this weekend!

When I make my New Year's resolutions, I like them to be measurable. Sure, general overarching goals are great— "Be a Better Person", "Eat Healthier", "Gossip Less"— but success is then objective and relative.

Last year, my resolutions included "Cook 5 new recipes a month" (Success!), "Run at least 5 miles a week" (Fail!). But having a quantitative goal gives me something against which to hold myself accountable.

Anyhow, it's 2012, and while I plan to keep cooking, it's time for a new goal/s. Here's one I'm particularly excited about: "Send one Just for Fun snail mail letter every week."

There's two motivations behind this. 1). I love stamps. I think stamp designs are some of the most charming I've ever seen. 2). Going to the mailbox is a favorite part of my day. Sure, it's usually full of trash, but for that 30 second walk, it feels like anything is possible. So I want to give my friends and family a periodic surprise.

Here's some of the stamps that have inspired this resolution.

So in 2012, I'll finally make a point to use those adorable notecards I love to shop for and design. Besides, we don't know how much longer the USPS is going to be there for us, and I want to take advantage of this amazing public service.

Assembling an Army

After a long morning of "but I don't wanna"s, it was back to work today. After a leisurely few weeks, it was a rough transition. Not having any family holiday obligations, I spent my days doing something I love— watching tv while crafting.

In fact I made a whole gaggle* of argyle friends to keep me company. I love monkeys, I love argyle—could there be a better combination??

2012: And I'm Feeling Good

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's new year and I'm Feeling Good.

I do feel good. ... resolutions are written, the ground is snow-free (for another hour or so) and I have 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls to watch.

It's 2012— Year of the Dragon, the London Summer Olympics, and another presidential election.

Now keeping with Lynn family tradition, Frank & Jenny didn't send holiday themed cards. Instead it's a little subtle New Year's propaganda.

And of course, keeping with our 2001 agreement (they receive free holiday card designs for life in return for my college tuition) it was designed by yours truly.

So welcome 2012—your revolution starts today.

December Recipes

Visions of Serif Fonts Danced in Their Heads

I'm in the midst of reading* Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs biography**. I've never been one to idolize Jobs; I do, however, acknowledge that Apple Computers was essential in directing the course of my life. The biography is a fascinating "read", both in terms of realizing who Jobs was as a person and in how he influenced the design industry—for having an idea is just as important as knowing how to execute it.

One of Job's demands for the Macintosh project in 1984, was insisting the platform come with an array of fonts, vs. one pixelated computer font. Jobs had audited a calligraphy couse in college and was enthralled by typography, and the world of san serifs and serifs.

"The delightful assortment of Macintosh fonts... would help launch the desktop publishing industry and be a boon for Apple's bottom-line. It also introduced all sorts of regular folks, ranging from high school journalists to moms who edited PTA newsletters to the quirky joy of knowing about fonts."***

The Macintosh's original suite of fonts, created by Susan Kare, were initially named for stops along the commuter rail in Philadelphia: Overbrook, Merion, Ardmore, and Rosemont. While Steve Jobs liked the idea of using cities as names, he wanted them to be "world-class cities" and the names were changed to Chicago, New York, Toronto, San Francisco, Geneva, London and Venice.

I'd like to thank Jobs for bringing fonts to the masses and thereby making everyone a DIY designer. I'd also like to thank Apple for 2003's 10.3 edition of Mac OSX that included Papyrus in it's font suite.

Sarcasm aside, I do thank Jobs [+Apple] for making my job easier and as a result, my life more user-friendly. I couldn't do it without you.

I Wanna Go Home

It's officially my longest relationship!* Longer than I was in any school, longer than any job I've had.... I've been in my house for 5 years today.

Buying a house wasn't the plan, it was a stubborn, impulse purchase, and, of course, right before the real estate market crashed. But it was one of the smarter moves I've made, and I like it much more than I anticipated— yard work and all. (I could do without the snow shoveling however).

I guess it all worked out okay.

Here's me and my house on move-in day, December 22, 2006. Look at that, 5 years and countless haircuts (and colors) later I've pretty much come full-circle. Now if only those jeans still fit!

No snow that Christmas either, 50+ degrees out and the yard needed a good raking!!

*My Ford Escort and I were actually together 12 years. We parted last December. I think of her often.

Little Miss Merry Christmas

I had a lot of fun working on this card, which is probably how I was able to get it out on time.

Burger of the Week #36

It's been over a year since I've been to a Burger King (though I just found out they serve Morningstar burgers– I wonder if they charbroil them too??) but I love their new burger bags! I'm so used to fast food restaurants, having bright, obnoxious "look at me! look at me!" bags that I think this bag is so tasteful and such a tribute to king of all sandwiches.

They even put their logo in non-BK colors. That's right Burger King, screw brand standards. I call this a fast food win.

Christmas is Ruined.

Does anyone remember Tillie the Talking Christmas Tree?

She was an animatronic tree that used to be on display at Breton Village Mall during the holiday season. (I found a couple mentions via google that say she was at Eastbrook Mall, and one that says North Kent Mall, but I swear it was Breton Village along with the amazing Polar Express display they used to have-- but I could be wrong!).

Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, she was the epitome of kitschy Christmas and I had this overwhelming need to see her. I made the trek out to Breton Village, but I'm afraid Tillie (and the Express) is no longer.

I can't express how crushingly devastated this discovery was. I like to imagine her leading a songs on the Island of Misfit Toys.

Little Liter Gnome

Inspired by the paper gnomes I saw in the Paper-Source catalog and reminded of the 2-liter penguins we made when I was younger (I couldn't find an photo of this project, but these instructions are pretty much the exact idea) – I came up with this little liter gnome.

He's made from a 1-liter bottle, paint and felt, and unlike his paper counterpart, can survive outside on the porch.

I didn't have specific instructions, but these would be an easy copy-cat project for your kids this holiday break!

If i was 6 years old again, I'd be so proud!!

The Crazy Fruit Lady

It's undoubtable that I will one day be the crazy neighbor who hands out toothbrushes to Trick-or-Treaters. As my coworkers showered each other with cookies and sweets, I decided to bring in Red Pears as my share of holiday goodwill. Fruit as a Christmas gift is, after all, a family tradition.

Attached to the pears I used the tags leftover from my 2008 Christmas card—which is my personal favorite of all my past cards (this years is a close second– but more on that at a later date). The card was meant to celebrate not Christmas, but all the forgotten holidays, and included gift tags for Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day and the Anniversary of the Frisbee, among others.

I was quite impressed with this "painted porcelain" dinnerware. The artist said they used a porcelain paint pen from a general craft shop. The design was drawn on and then baked.

Before the QR Code and the SnapTag there was the barcode— an acceptable and entirely functional design irritant.

Almost every product available comes with its very own barcode, which carries essential information regarding the item’s description, price, etc in those ugly little lines

Barcode Revolution, established in 2005, has come up with creative ways to mask the barcodes un-aestheticness. They've managed to find a little amusement in something that has always been ignored as strictly functional.

It's Christmas and the packages are piling up. I literally tripped over a delivery this morning as a left my house. But this gift was from me to me!

My latest Blurb creation, documenting Bethany's and my trip to Thailand last winter. These travel books are passion projects for me, often involving blood, sweat, and a few tears.

It's my largest Blurb book yet, 156 pages. And I tried for the first time the the hardcover dust jacket, which looks rather nice—though I think the image wrap is safer, as it won't tear or get lost. But per usual, the printing looks nice, the paper is fine and Blurb's customer service was extraordinarily helpful.

So it feels great to have one project done, and I've already moved onto the next!

There is nothing more sincere and precious than a child's imagination. When I discovered Child's Own, my heart swelled up and tears filled my eyes. This has to be one of the most beautiful concepts I have ever heard of.

Child's Own will take your child's original drawings and bring their world to life. What a wonderful way for a child's dreams to become real.

This whole idea makes me very, very happy, I don't even know what to say about it, except that I'm thankful for the people who encourage kids to dream and express themselves.

MSU Grads take on Etsy

My college roommate asked me a couple months ago if I'd ever heard of Etsy. I laughed at her.

Since then, Leighabee has joined Etsy as not only a shopper and a seller, but as a member of several teams including Treasuries by Color and Top Treasury.

Now I'm not much of a joiner, I'm more a stand on the sideline and make running commentary sort of gal, but I fully admire people who are.

Leighabee has gotten into full swing, making some of the most beautiful treasury listings I've seen! As a monochromatic girl, I love her style! Check out her stunning and vibrant selections here.

I've tried to make a few treasury lists of my own, but I've found that after placing three or four items, I'm ready to ditch. The results aren't nearly as curated and beautiful as Leighabee's creations. You can see my drab and lazy efforts here.

Much like LEGO's Design byMe, other companies are presenting consumers with similar Design Your Own options. It's gone beyond monogramming, and you can now pick your own material, style, color or patterns.

Product customization options seem particularly popular in the footwear industry. Reebok, Nike, Vans and even Wolverine's own Chaco are now providing consumers with an opportunity to adapt their shoes to show their own individual taste.

Converse shoes, whose Chuck Taylors have been popular in subcultures for generations, is blowin' this trend up. On their website you can customize several of their shoe styles. Here's my shoe creation— my how my monochromatic tendencies really shine.

While I found the user interface of Vans less finicky than Converse's, I'm more partial to the All-Stars as a shoe. Who knows, maybe my fab plaid creation here will catch on.

Punctuation Lust

I just love the graphic element of punctuation. But why?

I personally believe the internet can be credited with the rise in the popularity of punctuation. It all started with the @ in our email addresses. Suddenly the at (@) symbol became the most important key on the keyboard. But not to be left behind was the dot (.) and the hashtag (#).

When symbols begin to play such an important role in our daily communication, it isn't surprising that they'd begin to work themselves into our design and decor as well. Here's some great unique, handmade, products honoring those nimble little marks.

It's catalog season. And being a catalog designer, compulsive shopper and all around print design lover (and avid recycler!), I don't mind finding my mailbox crammed full of the endangered beasts.

As a child there was one catalog I revered over all others. Lego.

Legos have to be the perfect toy: colorful, versatile and creatively stimulating. I've watched the blocks transform over the years, from basic cubes to elaborate panels— creating licensed theme parks rather than generic cities. The transition saddens me a bit, but I will forever remain an enthusiast of the plastic bricks.

And now, we have Lego Design by Me, which allows the builder to dream up their own creation. You dream it, design it, and they send you the pieces to build it. It even comes in your own custom box. What a fabulously unique customization service!

The Not So Grand Opening

Good news everyone—Anthropologie at Breton Village Mall has opened!

Bad news... I found it surprisingly underwhelming.

Up till now, the only Anthropologie I'd been to was off 5th Ave in NYC, so my expectations were, you know, ... high.

I realize this is "only" Grand Rapids but after a year of anticipation I was ready to see the pages of the catalog come to life. The product and presentation simply fell a little flat for me.

So, in conclusion, I think I'd like to petition to have a ModCloth open a store in GR. :)

It's very rare that I walk away from a movie uncertain about how I feel.

I recently rented POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, a documentary about branding, advertising and product placement that is financed by brands, advertising and product placement.

Product placement is a form of advertising where branded goods appear in tv, movies, etc. The most infamous product placement in is probably the Reese's Pieces in ET in 1982. The candy was used prominently in the film to lure the alien out of it's hiding place (M&M supposedly turned down the opportunity to be this candy). Sales for Reese's Pieces went through the roof.

It's a Morgan Spurlock production (Super Size Me, 30 Days), which is part of it's appeal, and probably the only reason this concept had any chance of working.

Basically what happens is, Morgan wants to make a documentary about branding and product placement, and to do this he decides to have the entire movie funded by brands, promising them product placement in the film. So the entire documentary is him trying to lock down sponsors, and him plugging their products, while still retaining creative control of his film.

POM Wonderful ends up being the title sponsor. Merrell, a Wolverine World Wide brand is also a sponsor (which is the other part of the film's appeal- for me). Mane 'n Tail is NOT a sponsor interestingly enough, as they seem to get the most air time in the movie.

Now I'm in advertising, I get how this works, but I think I'm struggling here for a couple reasons.

First. Yes product placement happens. Yes producers go to corporations and give a schtict promising to prominently feature their products. But one would think they would choose products that naturally fit into a scene. (Dentists aren't going to have patients gargle with Quacker State motor oil for example.) And I for one would rather see a can of Coke versus a government issue style can of cola—it makes a scene in suburbia much more believable. (And in the case of the Reese's Pieces, it's cute!)

Second. There wasn't an end to the movie. I wanted to see if the movie was a success. Did the brands that sponsored this bizarre documentary see any positive results? But obviously they can't show the effects of a film, in the film they're currently making. It's logistically impossible (though I'm sure I could look it up now...). So the premiere of the movie (and reactions) is not in the movie because, well, they had to finish the movie before they could premiere it. (God my head hurts).

I'm sure Morgan realizes all this. He's simply poking fun at the whole process and challenging us to question everything we see. But I can't get past the question, did it work???

YES. I have to say it did. BECAUSE, after watching this movie, I said to myself, 'you know, I've never had POM. I think I should try it. And I went out and bought a little bottle of POM for $5—spending much more than I normally do on juice—and I tried it. I fell for it.

So any of you readers see it? Do you think it worked?

Warrington Colescott: Absurdly Delightful

It's great having friends who join things!
Tonight I was lucky enough to attend the member preview for “Warrington Colescott: Cabaret, Comedy & Satire” at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Now I had never heard of Warrington Colescott until a few weeks ago when I was touring ArtPrize and came across a poster at the GRAM advertising this upcoming exhibit. (in fact, I tried to vote for this banner). Being me, I always have a notebook, and fishing it out of the black hole that is my purse I made a note. Later this is what some of what Google told me:

Warrington Colescott (b. 1921 is Oakland, California) is an American artist best known for his satirical etchings. Warrington studied painting and drawing at University of California, Berkley and while he initially experiment primarily with screenprinting, by the '60s he was focused primarily on etchings with complex color. He has a cunning wit (even now, listening to him talk at 90 years old at the GRAM tonight!) and when you combine that his sharp imagination and enthralling artistic style, the result is fascinating.

I'm a fan of screen printing, etching and block printing in general. I like the process, I like the effect, I like the tactile-ness of it. I've dabbled with these “a bit”, but what Warrington has done is like nothing I've ever seen—it's on a whole different level.

His style, though varied, is very effective– the strokes are so unique and emotional, I never would have guessed they're etched. There's also an extraordinary element of collage, his use of color is brilliant and adventourous, and… he's funny!

There's a lot of history, politics and social commentary in these image. A lot of imitation of other artist in a surprisingly accurate manner, while still being entirely unique, and true to his medium. It's a lot of a fun and if you have a chance I highly recommend checking it out.

The exhibit runs from October 28th to January 15th.
Additionally there is a display of “Inside Jokes: the Tradition of Satire in Art” running in conjunction with Warrington's work. And if you're into printmaking there is a new exhibitions “Prophets, Priests and Kings: Woodcuts by Chris Stoffel Overvoorde” from November 18th to Jan 28th.

I know many of you were horrified when I said I took down "the wall". Well rest assured, I never took it down, it was just time for an update. Phase 2 shall we say?

I was very happy initially to have the wall complete, but the squareness of it always bothered me. Granted, I planned it out that way. The OCD alignment nerd in me did the math and figured out how to make the wall parallel. But I grew to need something freer. Something with more open space and fewer harsh lines. Something that could evolve and change easily. (Perhaps this is the Gaudí and Wright angels on my shoulders dueling it out).

So one day I just started taking pieces off. And putting them back in different orders. Removing all the black frames lightened up the wall and I added shelves to make it more dimensional and functional.

I'm happier now for the time being. But I'm sure "the wall" is certainly still a work in progress.I'd like to add a small, white, ornate mirror and a cuckoo clock but I'm still on the hunt for perfect specimens.

Shopping for Good Design

I admit it: I like pretty things. Not sparkly pretty like diamonds, but things that look nice and uncluttered. Things that are well designed and are functional items we can use in our everyday life. Things that are practical and beautiful.

There's no catalog that exemplifies what I mean than the MoMA catalog. The MoMA store continuously offers innovative products that are fun to look at and simply make sense. This description is taken from the MoMA website.

"New York’s Museum of Modern Art is known for its extraordinary exhibitions and for presenting the world’s finest collection of modern and contemporary art. ....the MoMA Design Store exemplifies good design with a well-edited selection of products highlighting the latest in materials, production, and design concepts from around the world."

Here's a few personal favorites taken from the MoMA site:

Half Pint Creamer: It's kitsch with a purpose. There's no surprise here that I like it. Nothing says cafeteria like milk in cardboard boxes.

Collapsable Salad Spinner: Salad spinners are totally necessary. What frustrates me with these necessary kitchen items is how much cupboard space they require. Cupboards should be built like Mary Poppins' carpet bag. Million dollar idea right there. Someone make it happen. (Also I really want the dress Jane is wearing in the above clip. Make that happen too.)

Ray Tray: The mesh of this fruit rack prevents produce from spoiling. Love that the tiers keep veggies from squishing each other or disappearing under the depths to mold in secret. Also, the technique of building up and not out allows more storage with less counter space. Appreciated.

Conceal Bookshelf: I love books. And I love the idea of stacking books from floor to ceiling. But this is an illogical desire, because how would I access the books at the bottom? Problem solved.

I'm a long-time fan of Matthew Sporzynski's paper constructions which have been seen in Real Simple Magazine since 2005. (Sporzynski also happens to be responsible for the Sherman Williams ads I was admiring over a year ago).

So when I saw the 3D Paper Art of Noelia Lozano I was quite impressed. Noelia started out studying journalism and telecommunications, but later realized she was interested in design and changed her area of study. I applaud her for following her passion.

They Brought Their Own Pumpkins

The signs are all around us: football clogs the television stations, leaves crackle underfoot, and the house distinctly like cinnamon (or is it nutmeg?). Autumn is here.

Summer made a valiant effort, giving us it's last stand with 80 degree weather just a week ago. But Autumn has taken over. And while I know this means snow is mere days away, I decided to celebrate this transitional season with a Pumpkin Carving Party.

I hadn't carved a pumpkin in well over a decade, and I wanted my friends around as witnesses, in case I detached a digit or some such thing. That, and I needed them to help me eat my double bundt.

It was a distinctly Fallish afternoon. Take a look:

It's our diverse pumpkin collective. A masterpiece in itself.

Snacks to go! I had never made granola before, but thanks to Martha I now know how.

Party's not over yet— I still have seeds to toast! And luckily we didn't need it, but I had the first aid kit all ready to go!

I think harvest time is best at twilight! After being inside all day with the fresh squash, burning candles, mulling wine and crackling (electric) fire, the house was toasty warm and smelled cozy and delicious.

Last Thursday, as the design team discussed the loss of Steve Jobs, we meandered back to the stories of our first computers.

Mine was a Commodore 64, and a collection of stellar, classic arcade games. It was 1987 when my brother got that computer for Christmas—I was 4 years old. I don't remember life without a computer, but I do recognize how they've changed and how they've changed my life.

While the platforms may have advanced for the greater good, I'm not sure I can say the same for the games. That's right, it's Burger Time. You can reminisce online here.

As Jenny and I are in the midst of preparing for Fall and Holiday Art Markets, we thank all of you who cleaned their closets and donated their old clothing—to be turned into our new inventory!

ArtPrize and my Battle Against Cynicism

Well, I've given the Top 10 announcement some time to sink in—and this is not meant as a criticism, rather a frustrated observation—I believe that ArtPrize has lost it's heart and soul. While I maintain that the event has been manipulated and merchandised, and that public opinion threatens to make GR look silly and tasteless, I still spent the afternoon on the streets of our city in search of art. And I found lots.

The art is out there, and so are the people. I think it just takes time for people to get past the centrally located, larger than life bits, and for word of mouth to spread about the gems hidden in church basements and up freaky freight elevators. Round One isn't long for rumor and buzz to take root, so it's all about location, location, location.

Today I heard a lot of "If this was in the GRAM, it'd be in the top ten instead of _______ ". And these comments were probably correct. The way the event works now, (certain) Venues essentially choose the winners before the public get a vote, simply by selecting them to be in their facility.

Needlesstosay, I'm insanely disappointed with this years Top Ten. Slightly embarrassed even, and concerned what it'll do to the city's and event's reputations. Unfortunately though, I think Jesus is going to win this one.

Jam on with Ryan Gosling

I'd like to personally thank Ryan Gosling (seriously, does anyone know how I could get in touch with him?). For many winters now, I've been in search of adult-sized footed-pajamas.

Well praise be to Ryan Gosling! Thanks to his appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show, I can pad around my house in fleece-footed happiness!

Check out the many, many styles on Jumpin' Jammerz. I went with the hooded footed pajamas with pockets and thumb holes! My one complaint is there is no foot grippies—it's been quite treacherous on my wood floors.

And, if you have a couple hours to spare, check out the Ultimate Ryan Gosling Animated Gif Wall. It's a good time (but seriously don't click on it unless you're looking for a major diversion from whatever you're supposed to be doing right now).

Put a Hat on It!

Ever since Kate and Williams wedding and the fabulous hat sightings, there's been an increasing fascination with the art above the fold. As a salute to the motherland, I decided to have an Afternoon Tea Party.

So on a semi-rainy Saturday, we gathered in our finest finery, raised our pinkies and drank a glass in honor of Kate, William and all those other royal Brits.

It was an afternoon full of cucumbers, crumpets and fewer F-bombs than I'm typically comfortable with.

The winner of the Pierpont: The Award for Best Hat (beating out even Pierpont himself), was Miss Meredith (right), whose handmade creation added an additional 20 inches to her height.

Thanks to all the ladies who joined me in this great hat experiment. Cheers to finding our muchness!
